The die is the most expensive wear part on a pellet mill, and it's also the part most affected by what happens before the feed ever reaches it. Most premature die failures trace back to the same handful of causes — feed that's too dry, conditioning that's inconsistent, or clearance that's drifted out of spec. None of them take long to check.
Run this checklist before every batch, not just when output quality drops. A few minutes of checking moisture and clearance is far cheaper than reconditioning a worn die.
What Wears a Die Down Fastest
- Feed moisture that's too low, increasing friction against the die wall
- Abrasive ingredients (mineral content, fibrous material) processed at high volume
- Inconsistent conditioning temperature, forcing the die to do work the conditioner should
- Roller-to-die clearance that's drifted wider than spec over time
Pre-Batch Checklist

Check feed moisture
Aim for the moisture range specified for your formula — typically 14–17% for most feed pellets. Too dry increases die wear; too wet reduces pellet durability.

Confirm conditioner temperature
Verify the conditioner is reaching and holding its target temperature before feed starts flowing through — a cold start pushes more wear onto the die.

Inspect roller-to-die clearance
Check clearance against your model's spec sheet. A gap that's too wide reduces the rolling compression that should be doing most of the work, not the die surface.

Listen and watch the first few minutes
Uneven pellet texture or a rise in motor load in the first minutes of a run is often the earliest sign something upstream of the die needs adjusting.
After Each Run
- Clear residual feed from the die holes before it hardens
- Wipe down the roller assembly and check for uneven wear patterns
- Note any change in output rate or pellet quality for next time
When to Recondition or Replace
If hole diameters have visibly enlarged, output has dropped despite correct moisture and conditioning, or pellets are coming out inconsistently sized across the die face, it's time to have the die reconditioned or swapped for a new one rather than pushing it further.
