A thresher only earns its keep for a few weeks a year, and the rest of the time it sits. What happens during that idle stretch decides whether it starts clean next season or needs a rebuild. Husk dust holds moisture against bare metal, and that's where rust starts — usually somewhere you won't notice until it's already a problem.
This is a one-time routine at the end of each harvest, not an ongoing task. Plan on 30–45 minutes right after your last run of the season, while the husk is still loose and easy to clear.
Why Off-Season Storage Matters
Corn husk and cob dust are hygroscopic — they pull moisture from the air and hold it against the machine's sheet metal and drum. Combined with months of inactivity, that's enough to start surface rust on bearings, the threshing drum, and any exposed fasteners, even indoors.

Clear every husk pocket
Open the access panels and clear compacted husk from the drum housing, the discharge chute, and around the belt guard — not just the visible hopper area.

Wipe down and dry all surfaces
Use a dry cloth or compressed air rather than water. If the machine got wet during the last run, let it dry fully before covering it.

Oil and grease every metal contact point
Apply a light machine oil to the drum shaft, bearings, and any exposed unpainted steel. Grease chain links and moving joints per your model's fitting points.

Release belt tension
Loosen drive belts so they aren't held stretched for months — constant tension while idle causes belts to stretch or crack prematurely.

Cover and store off bare ground
Store the machine under a roof, on a pallet or dry pad, and cover it with a breathable tarp rather than plastic sheeting, which traps condensation.
Pre-Season Startup Checklist
- Re-tension belts to the manufacturer's spec before running
- Turn the drum by hand first to check for stiffness or rust spots
- Re-grease any points that were serviced before storage
- Run the machine empty for a minute before feeding any crop through
